The former New York mayor, 76, has spearheaded the US president’s legal challenges against election results in several key states, with dismal results.
US President Donald Trump tweeted that Rudy Giulani, his personal lawyer who led legal efforts to overturn his election defeat last month to Joe Biden, has tested positive for the coronavirus.
Trump’s tweet on Sunday did not specify when Giuliani, 76, a former New York mayor, was diagnosed with COVID-19. Further details on Giuliani’s condition were not immediately released.
The president said Giuliani “worked tirelessly to denounce the most corrupt (by far!) Elections in US history.”
“Get well Rudy soon, we will continue,” he added.
Giuliani spearheaded the Republican president’s attempts to overturn election results in several key states.
The sometimes shameful effort which proved largely unsuccessful, with judges sometimes criticizing the lack of effort in the prosecution.
Giuliani is Trump’s latest ally to test positive for coronavirus. The president himself, who has approached the pandemic restrictions and mask wearing with skepticism, had contracted and recovered from COVID-19 in October.
The United States, the hardest-hit country in the world, is currently experiencing a new outbreak of coronavirus cases that threaten to overwhelm health systems as they enter their colder months.
To date, more than 14.3 million infections have been confirmed in the United States, with the number of related deaths exceeding 228,000.
Giuliani was also at the center of attempts to dig up the dirt on Biden in Ukraine, which involved an alleged campaign of pressure from Trump that was at the heart of the impeachment process against the president.
