Americans are expected to continue their travel plans for the Christmas holidays with more than a million daily air passengers expected for several days during the holiday period, said David Pekoske, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, at a aeronautical event Tuesday.

Americans plan to travel despite advice from the Center for Disease Control to stay home and celebrate with the people they live with.

Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s leading infectious disease expert, said the Christmas season could pose greater risks than Thanksgiving when it comes to the spread of the coronavirus, and urged Americansdouble measures such as wearing masks, avoiding crowds and social distancing.

Despite Pekoske’s forecast, passenger traffic has declined steadily since Thanksgiving as the country faces an increase in new infections. In the last seven days to Monday, airlines carried just 33.5% of passengers compared to the equivalent week in 2019, an average of around 725,000 per day. Passenger numbers are the lowest seven-day average since late September, TSA data shows.
