The Orange Bowl typically hosts a team from the CCA, and that will likely be the case on January 2, 2021, although two of the teams in that conference are likely playing in the college football playoffs.
In another year, maybe the Orange Bowl would get one of Notre Dame or Clemson on their land. But unless there is a shock, the CFP committee will send these two teams to the national semi-finals. That likely leaves the 87th annual Orange Bowl with North Carolina, which is likely a taste of Sam Howell before the quarterback argues for the No.1 pick in the 2022 overall standings in the fall. The Orange Bowl will likely bring an SEC team into the debates this year as well, as two strong programs from this conference (Florida and Texas A&M) could miss the CFP.
The 2019 Orange Bowl was played between Florida and Virginia, with the Gators winning 36-28. It has been played with over 60,000 fans every year since 1994, but that will likely be a drastically reduced number as the number of COVID-19 increases across the country.

Orange bowl projections
Bill Bender of Sporting News screened earlier this week that the Fiesta Bowl will feature Texas A&M against North Carolina. It would be a juicy game for high-end quarterback fans, as the Aggies’ Kellen Mond would take on UNC’s Sam Howell.
There would also be some logic in Florida to play in this season’s Orange Bowl after the Gators placed the SEC in the SEC Championship against Alabama. Assuming that Clemson and Notre Dame both make the college football playoffs, it would be difficult for the committee to send a different ACC team than North Carolina to Miami Gardens. And while two ACC teams are likely to make it to the CFP semi-finals, expect the Orange Bowl to bring an ACC team, as that’s part of its usual brand.

Where is Orange Bowl being played in 2021?
The Orange Bowl is being played in the Miami area, as usual. It has been technically played for 25 years in Miami Gardens, where Hard Rock Stadium is located.
There will be fans at the Orange Bowl, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis allowing Hard Rock Stadium to return to full capacity midway through the NFL season. The Dolphins have capped game participation at 13,000, however, which, unless one more update, will likely resemble the Orange Bowl participation.
