Apple to start building electric vehicle with ‘breakthrough’ battery in 2024

The car may also have multiple LiDAR sensors to understand the surrounding area. In addition to sourcing components from outside suppliers, Apple could reuse the LiDAR sensors it created for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro for the task.

According to Reuters, work on the car has progressed sufficiently since Apple dismissed 200 employees from the Titan Project team that the company plans to “build a vehicle for consumers”. The company is likely to call on an outside partner to help with manufacturing. however, Reuters warns that delays related to a pandemic could push production back to 2025 or later, and that there is a chance that Apple decides to reduce the scope of the project.

In other words, rather than building its own car, it could work with traditional car manufacturers to incorporate the technology it is developing into their vehicles, just as it is already doing with CarPlay. We wouldn’t hold Apple to a 2024 release date yet – a contradictory report earlier in the week resulted in a much more aggressive schedule. Obviously, Apple is working on some kind of automotive technology, but the scope of the project continues to evolve.
