Three others were injured in the raid on Syrian air defense forces in the Nabi Habeel region, Syrian media reported.

A Syrian soldier was killed and several others injured in an Israeli attack on a military position in the countryside of Damascus near the Zabadani valley, the state-run SANA news agency said, citing a military source.

“Today at 1.30am (10.30pm GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial assault with missile bursts from the north of the Galilee, targeting a unit of our air defense forces in the Nabi Habeel region,” the military source said on Wednesday.

“Our air defense countered some of the missiles, which left one martyr and injured three soldiers.”

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the number of injured had risen to five, two of them in serious condition.

The raids also targeted and destroyed Hezbollah rocket and ammunition depots near the town of Zabadani, near the Lebanese border, the war observer said.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said pro-Iranian groups are using the heights around Zabadani to store arms and ammunition.

“Hezbollah uses (the area) as a storage location before transporting weapons and ammunition to Lebanon,” he said.

Israel refused to confirm or deny the attack.

“We do not comment on foreign media reports,” an army spokesman told AFP.

Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes on Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011, targeting government troops, allied Iranian forces and fighters from the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

He rarely confirms details of his operations in Syria, but says Iran’s presence in support of President Bashar al-Assad is a threat he will continue to respond to.

This is the second Israeli attack in Syria last week.

Syrian media reported last Thursday that air defense systems responded to another Israeli airstrike in the northwest of the country.

Four buildings, part of an ammunition factory in Masyaf, where the attack took place, were damaged.
