Tesla uses three free months of ‘fully autonomous driving’ to boost year-end sales

Must read

  • Navigate on Autopilot: Automatically driving from the freeway ramp to the exit ramp, including interchanges and passing slower cars.

  • Automatic lane change: Automatic lane change while driving on a motorway.

  • Autopark: parallel and perpendicular spaces.

  • Summon: your parked car will find you anywhere in a parking lot. Really.

  • Traffic light and stop sign control: assisted stops at traffic-controlled intersections.

While Musk recently said the subscription package will be available early next year, adding that technology for good has come at varying prices over the past few months. Now, as Tesla strives to meet record delivery targets by year-end, it has become an incentive.

Not everyone is happy with the offer, however, especially with how Tesla advertises its “advanced safety and convenience feature” and “Full Self-Driving” technology. As the Tesla website notes in slightly smaller type, “the currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”

NTSB member Jennifer Homendy noted the difference a thread of tweets, saying “Fully autonomous driving” suggests that the vehicle can be driven straight away, without human operator intervention. This is not true. Safeguards should be in place to prevent such misleading claims. “
