The Australian Grand Prix could be postponed due to the surge in COVID-19, Autosport reports.

The season is still set to start in Melbourne on March 21, but if it takes place this year it will likely be held on a postponed date.

The Bahrain Grand Prix, due to start on March 28, is now likely to open the 2021 Formula 1 season.

Autosport reports that the Australian Grand Prix could be postponed due to Australia’s strict travel restrictions and the emergence of a new strain of COVID-19.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has provided Wide World of Sports with the following statement:

“The Australian Grand Prix Corporation continues to work closely with the Victorian government and Formula 1 on the terms and arrangements for the hosting of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in 2021. Further details will be provided upon finalizing arrangements with all parties in the coming weeks. “

A Formula 1 spokesperson made the following statement to Autosport:

“We have established our 2021 schedule and look forward to the return of F1 in March of this year.”

Australian GP 2020 was canceled due to the coronavirus.
