The company said on its @TwitterSafety account that it is “severely restricting engagement with Tweets tagged under our Civic Integrity Policy due to the risk of violence,” and “exploring other measures to ‘intensified application’. It was not immediately clear what these “climbed” stages could be.

While Twitter has tagged many of Trump’s past tweets, the latest warnings are the first time the company has explicitly stated that the president’s words could incite violence. The company has said previously he would give priority to tweets “inciting illegal behavior to prevent a peaceful transfer of power or an orderly succession”.

The move also sparked cries that, in the face of growing violence in the nation’s capital, Twitter must do more than just apply labels. “There have been good arguments for private companies not to silence elected officials, but all of these arguments rest on the protection of constitutional governance,” tweeted Alex stamos, Former senior Facebook security official. “Twitter and Facebook must cut him off. There are no more legitimate actions and labeling will not do it. “
