Markelle Fultz injury update: Former draft top pick tears ACL to basket

Must read

Markelle Fultz’s mission to resuscitate her career in Orlando took a hit Wednesday night when he tore her left ACL while driving to the basket in a 105-94 victory over the Cavaliers.

Fultz suffered the injury in the first quarter as he tried to find space to shoot down the hall. He will be missing the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

The 22-year-old, selected No.1 overall by the 76ers in the 2017 NBA Draft, had averaged his career-best numbers over his first seven games. His score average (14.3) and assist average (6.1) were higher than ever and were ultimately shooting above 80% of the line after shooting 53.4% of the strip during his two first professional campaigns.

In addition to the ACL backhand, Fultz has faced shoulder issues throughout his career that have been used to explain his below par jumper.

Philadelphia traded Fultz to the Magic two years ago for Jonathon Simmons and a pair of draft picks – a slight comeback after the 76ers gave up the opportunity to pick Jayson Tatum to pick him.

Fultz has apparently benefited from both the change of scenery and a more patient fan base. However, its progress will be put on hold for the foreseeable future.
