DeVonta Smith injury status: Alabama wide receiver Heisman sidelined with hand problem

Must read

Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith did not return to Monday’s college football playoff championship game after injuring his hand in the third quarter.

The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner appeared to get his fingers caught in a collision as he attempted to pass through the middle. He spent more than 15 minutes in the medical tent before heading to the locker room with a towel on his hand. He then returned to the sideline with his bandaged hand.

Smith gathered a legendary stat line against Ohio State before coming out, getting 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns. His efforts, though limited to half, helped Alabama to a 52-24 victory.

Smith is expected to enter the top 10 in the 2021 NFL Draft. Alabama teammate Jaylen Waddle could join him in the first round. Waddle played on an ankle injury and limped after being thrown several times.

Alabama didn’t need Smith to come back; The team led by 21 points as he made his way to the locker room, then added a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to extend the margin to 28.
