A look at how impeachment works and what Congress can do before Trump’s official term ends on January 20.

The impeachment process typically takes weeks or more, but after the deadly riot on Capitol Hill it is advancing at breakneck speed.

The US House of Representatives is expected to take action on Tuesday calling on Vice President Mike Pence and members of Donald Trump’s cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a president deemed unfit to perform their duties.

On Monday, Democrats presented an impeachment article on Trump’s speech and encouraged his supporters to march on Capitol Hill.

Rudy Giuliani, his personal lawyer, urged people hours before the attack to adopt the “trial by combat”.
