China Calls for ‘Better Angels’ to Overcome Reset with US | Joe Biden News

Beijing welcomes the news that the United States will join the World Health Organization and the Paris climate agreement.

China congratulated President Joe Biden on his inauguration and called for a reset in Beijing-Washington relations as the new administration ends Donald Trump’s rocky tenure.

Beijing also said Thursday that it welcomed the news that the United States would join the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris climate agreement, as Biden tried to immediately bring his office back to a key role of global leadership.

The new US president is expected to remain tough on China, but commit to international cooperation after Trump’s “America First” divisive approach.

“With the cooperation of both sides, the best angels in Sino-US relations will defeat the evil forces,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a press briefing.

She said Biden used the word “unity” several times in his inaugural address, and that it was “precisely what is needed in US-China relations right now.”

Under Trump, tensions with China have plunged to low on trade, security, technology, the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, and human rights.

In a latest dig inside the Trump administration, Beijing said on Wednesday it was sanctioning more than two dozen members and former officials of the former president’s government, including its secretary of state Mike Pompeo.

Officials and their family members will not be allowed to enter mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, the Foreign Ministry said.

“In recent years, the Trump administration, especially Pompeo, has buried too many mines in US-China relations that need to be cleared, burned too many bridges to build, and destroyed too many roads to repair,” Hua said. Thursday.
