Syria says Israeli planes carried out attacks in the central province, adding that its military shot down most of the missiles.

Syrian state media claim that Israeli warplanes fired several missiles into Syria’s central region in Hama early Friday, adding that its air defense forces shot down most of the missiles. However, he gave no word about the victims.

State-run SANA news agency quoted an unnamed military official as saying Friday’s attack took place shortly before dawn when Israeli warplanes flew over neighboring Lebanon.

“Around four o’clock [02;00 GMT] In the morning of today, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial assault with a barrage of missiles coming from the direction of the Lebanese city of Tripoli, aiming at certain targets near the governorate of Hama. Our air defenses clashed with enemy missiles and shot down most of them, ”the report said, citing a military source.

Israel has launched hundreds of raids on what it calls Iranian-related military targets in Syria over the years, but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations. Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, have supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war by providing military supplies and fighters.

Friday’s attack was Israel’s first attack on Syria since US President Joe Biden took office. Israel justified the attacks inside Syria, saying Iran and Hezbollah posed a security risk.

On January 13, Israeli warplanes carried out heavy airstrikes in eastern Syria, apparently striking positions and arms depots of Iran-backed forces, killing at least 57 fighters and injuring tens – the worst attack in years.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor following the war in Syria, said it recorded 39 Israeli attacks inside Syria in 2020 that hit 135 targets, including including military posts, warehouses or vehicles.

The raids also come as part of the escalation of low-altitude Israeli fighter missions in the Lebanese skies that have caused nervousness among residents.
