Joseph Suaalii could line up for the Sydney Roosters in the first round after the club filed a formal request with the NRL to allow the teenage sensation to take to the pitch when she was just 17.

Suaalii, who turns 18 in September, is unable to play in the NRL until he officially reaches that age under current league rules.

The 17-year-old is arguably the hottest schoolboy perspective in NRL history. He had previously been at the center of a bitter battle between rugby union and the league, with several clubs from the NRL and Rugby Australia are scrambling to obtain the signing of the young star before South Sydney releases him to their great rival.

ARL commission chairman Peter V’landys said The Daily Telegraph the Roosters recently demanded Suaalii be on the pitch as soon as possible, with other clubs being urged to take a similar approach if they are looking to step up a young star.

“They filed a petition”, Peter V’landys, president of the ARL

“We have, however, requested additional information to consider this request.

“This young man is a real exception. But any club is able to make a request on this or that subject.”

The teenager was hired for South Sydney on a deal worth around $ 60,000 but had no interest in staying at Redfern, with the Roosters looking to add Suaalii to their team as quickly as possible after contract negotiations between him and the Rabbitohs turned sour.

Suaalii’s move to Bondi was confirmed in December.

“Joseph is a very talented young player and we are delighted to have secured his service,” Roosters recruiting manager Daniel Anderson said in a statement.

“This is a great opportunity for Joseph to continue his development alongside the established players we have at Club like James Tedesco, Daniel Tupou and Joseph Manu, and we look forward to monitoring his progress over the next few years.”
