UFC referee Herb Dean stunned fans on Sunday when he appeared to stop the fight between Marina Rodriguez and Amanda Ribas before changing his mind, stepping back at the last second and confusing the two fighters in the process.
Rodriguez, who was hit the hardest by the blunder, emerged victorious from the Octagon via a second-round TKO, but not without controversy.
At the start of the second round, Rodriguez took complete control of the fight with solid ground at the start of the second, when it appeared that the referee had rushed to stop the fight.
But as Dean stepped in, he seemed to change his mind, pulling back as both fighters looked confused in the process.
Fortunately for Rodriguez, the referee’s blunder did not take his victory. Seconds later, she ended the fight with a vicious hook that put Ribas on her feet.
Fans were sent into Twitter meltdown because of Dean’s blunder, and many were left stunned the fight wasn’t over when it appeared to call it off.
