The 47-year-old former Paris St Germain coach replaces Lampard who was sacked this week.
Thomas Tuchel became the latest manager to take over from Chelsea with the Premier League club confirming that the German Replacement of Frank Lampard Tuesday.
Lampard was sacked by Chelsea on Monday – midway through his second season at the helm – after being unable to replicate his success as the club’s top scorer in his first Premier League managerial job.
Tuchel, the 47-year-old former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint Germain coach, has accepted an 18-month contract with a one-year option, the west London club have announced.
“I would like to thank Chelsea FC for their confidence in me and my staff,” said Tuchel, who met the players at Chelsea’s training headquarters in Cobham, in a statement.
“We all have the greatest respect for the work of Frank Lampard and the legacy he has created at Chelsea. At the same time, I can’t wait to meet my new team and participate in the most exciting league in football. I’m grateful to be part of the Chelsea family – it’s amazing! “
Chelsea manager Marina Granovskaia said that while it was not easy to change coaches in the middle of the season “we are very happy to have one of the best European coaches in Thomas Tuchel”.
“There is still a lot to play and to accomplish, this season and beyond. We welcome Thomas to the club, ”she added.
Tuchel has an impressive managerial CV, although mostly with PSG in a much less competitive league than the English elite. He won back-to-back French league titles and took them to the Champions League final last season, but was sacked and replaced by Mauricio Pochettino in December.
Chelsea have lost five of their last eight Premier League games and have fallen to ninth as Lampard has spent nearly $ 300million on new players this season.
The former Chelsea player lacked managerial experience, having spent only one season at Derby County second tier before he answered the call to return to Stamford Bridge and replace Maurizio Sarri.
Lampard qualified for the Champions League in his debut season by securing a fourth place in the Premier League.
The 42-year-old is very affectionate by Chelsea fans and has been praised for giving eight academy graduates a first-team debut upon his arrival in July 2019.
But having secured one of the biggest management jobs in English football so early in his career, Lampard leaves Stamford Bridge unsuccessfully, having lost the 2020 FA Cup final to Arsenal.
