Police said the small explosion was caused by a “ very low intensity improvised device ” and did not cause any injuries.

A “very low intensity” device exploded near the Israeli embassy in the Indian capital, but there were no injuries and little damage, police said on Friday.

New Delhi police said the only damage was to the windows of three cars parked nearby, which were shattered in the explosion.

A preliminary investigation “suggests a malicious attempt to create a sensation,” police said in a statement.

The area around the embassy was cordoned off after the explosion, and police and demining experts took control.

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said he spoke to his counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi about the explosion.

“We take this very seriously,” he said on Twitter. “Ensured the fullest protection of the Israeli embassy and diplomats. The case is under investigation and no effort will be spared to find the culprits. “

Commenting on the incident, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “the incident is under investigation by the Indian authorities, who are in contact with the relevant Israeli authorities”.

An unnamed Israeli official was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying that Israel is treating the explosion as a “terrorist” incident.

The explosion occurred shortly after 5:00 p.m. IST (11:30 GMT), when Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a military ceremony one kilometer from the site.

The Indian capital is also on security alert amid protests by farmers over government farm reforms which deteriorated into serious unrest this week.

Thousands of Indian farmers marched overnight to reinforce their fellow protesters camping on the outskirts of the capital, to urge the government to withdraw three new farm laws they said would hurt their livelihoods.

In 2012, an explosion near the embassy in New Delhi injured the wife of an Israeli diplomat, her driver and two other people. This coincided with an attack on another Israeli diplomat in Tbilisi, Georgia.
