The interim leaders will oversee preparations for elections slated for later this year, according to the UN.

Participants in the UN-sponsored peace talks in Libya have approved a slate of candidates seeking to lead a transitional government, the United Nations said.

The transitional government will oversee preparations for a national election at the end of 2021 that aims to end a decade of chaos and conflict that has left Libya divided in the middle and hammered its vital oil exports upon which the country’s economy depends. country.

The 75 participants in the talks in Switzerland, ranging from regional and tribal figures to representatives of political factions, will vote next week to choose a three-person presidential council and a prime minister.

They will choose from 24 candidates for the three presidential council positions, while 21 people vie for the post of prime minister, according to the UN list released on Saturday.

As the UN-backed talks progressed, many Libyans fear that competition for posts could spark more fighting, dismantling a ceasefire largely in place since October.

Armed factions

Libya has been ravaged by chaos since 2011, when a NATO-backed uprising toppled and later killed longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The country has been divided since 2014 between the rival administrations of Tripoli in the west and Benghazi in the east.

The internationally recognized Tripoli National Accord Government (GNA) is backed by Turkey, while the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army of renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar, based in the east, is backed by the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Egypt.

The two sides represent sometimes unstable coalitions of different political, regional and armed factions.

Participants in the UN negotiations agreed on a formula for voting on transitional government candidates this month.

The list of approved candidates includes Aguila Saleh, head of the eastern-based parliament, as well as GNA Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha, Defense Minister Saleh Namroush and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maetig.
