Last week, Facebook and Apple announced another quarter of profits (at each other’s throats), and we’re starting this week with Nintendo doing incredibly well. Despite the lack of major game launches in recent months, the company’s Switch console has had its best quarter ever. Nintendo sold more of its hybrid console than the 3DS: just under 80 million.
Despite next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft, the Switch’s versatility shone in the lockdown. With plenty of families inside, perhaps sharing a single TV, the ability to play Nintendo’s console independently works well for groups vying for control of the big screen.
Later this week, Sony, Spotify, Google’s parent company, Alphabet and many more will report how their businesses have performed in the last quarter. Judging from the previous results, expect most tech companies to have resisted, if not thrived, the story of the pandemic.

NASA’s Artemis program might not bring people to the moon on time. According to a report by The edge, NASA quietly pushed back the deadline for awarding two lunar lander contracts from late February to April 30, including the lunar landing system contract involving companies such as Blue Origin and SpaceX. Ring Police Collaborations did not slow down in 2020 despite the controversies – if anything, they increased. According to Financial Times, the security brand for the smart home owned by Amazon now 2,014 partnerships with police and firefighters in the United States, of which 1,189 were added in 2020. Montana and Wyoming are the only two states where Ring does not have an alliance.
These departments also use teams. Ring said departments requested videos for more than 22,335 incidents in 2020. While users gained more control over Ring video sharing in 2020 and recently obtained end-to-end encryption, some of the privacy concerns associated with these partnerships have remained the same. Just because you’re comfortable with sharing videos doesn’t mean you’re in the clear – said the Electronic Frontier Foundation FT that neighbors and passers-by could be filmed without consent. Apple bought Siân Heder’s coming-of-age tale CODA (“Children of Deaf Adults”) at the Sundance Film Festival for around $ 25 million – the biggest deal ever at the event. Although the games weren’t the best.
Nintendo sold 11.57 million Switch consoles in the last quarter, bringing lifetime sales to 79.87 million. This is a seven percent increase over the same period last year. That said, Nintendo didn’t have a lot of big game releases last quarter, beyond The Legend of Zelda spin-off. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Yes there was Mario Kart Live: Home circuit and Pikmin 3 Deluxe, but these only sold 1.08 million and 1.94 million units respectively. Barely hits the blows.
The next quarter should offer more temptations. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser Fury, an updated version of the critically acclaimed 3D platformer, releases February 12. It will be followed by Persona 5 Strikers February 23 and Bravely Default II, a true successor to Square Enix’s RPG franchise. Continue reading.
