This page is part of IGN’s Valheim Wiki Guide and details everything you need to know about activating and using the Vulkan API in Valheim after its last Update 0.146.8.
What is the Vulkan API and why use it with Valheim
Released as part of their Update 0.146.8, players can now activate the use of Vulkan in Valheim. Vulkan is essentially an API (Application Programming Interface) that works very well like DirectX and OpenGL for those who may not be familiar with such technology. Vulkan is best known for delivering better performance in games, often regardless of a gamer’s CPU and GPU.
Since Valheim is still in Early Access, there’s no denying that there are plenty of improvements that could be made to improve game performance. While you can still choose to use performance-enhancing mods, Vulkan is officially supported by Steam. . The developers, Iron Gate, even believe that Vulkan can fix some of the random crashes related to GPU drivers and other factors. You can view the full release notes for the Update 0.146.8
Ultimately, though, if you’re using older hardware, there’s no real harm in trying Vulkan as many players have reported almost doubling their initial FPS.
