Super Nintendo World is a theme park that celebrates video games, so it’s probably not too much surprise that its designers recreated the entire park in VR and created its centerpiece Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge ride as a playable virtual attack inside a game engine. At a press conference on the opening of Super Nintendo World Osaka Today, executives at Universal Creative were asked how the new park is using technology to bring theme park design into a new era.

After discussing more generally how technology could enable the park to evolve, global executive producer Tom Geraghty added a juicy detail: “We also used technology in the design process. We built the whole lot. in VR and the design team were able to look around at one location and get lines of sight and figure out where to move the elements.

“Mario Kart was built into a game engine, so [senior vice president Thierry Coup] was back in the States, he could actually drive Mario Kart in a game engine, and give us ratings in Japan. “Considering that Universal and Nintendo want you to visit their parks someday, I doubt we’ll have a public version of this version of the game anytime soon – but it turns out that it has more benefits than just the enjoyment of its games. designers.

Coup added that the game engine design means the ride can evolve more easily over time: “Because it’s in a game engine, we can keep updating, improving, putting new characters. . [in], change the theme, change actions on the fly. So if there is a special event, anything we want to post can be done overnight if we really want to. It makes it so much more flexible – it refreshes the experience. Every time you come back you might experience something new and exciting. “

This is mainly possible because, although Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge is a traditional track race, it uses augmented reality along the way to conjure up enemies and landscapes. These are presumably what could be improved or remixed on different days.

Super Nintendo World opens today in Osaka, Japan, with versions of the same park at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Singapore, and Epic Universe in Orlando (but the latter may not open before 2025).
