Seth Rogen is set to play Steven Spielberg’s “favorite uncle” in the director’s upcoming semi-biopic, which is loosely based on Spielberg’s childhood growing up in Arizona.
, Rogen was called in to play young Spielberg’s beloved uncle in the untitled film. He joins the cast alongside Michelle Williams who would be on board to play a character inspired by Spielberg’s mother. Casting is also reportedly underway for several of the different children’s roles, one of which “will play the role inspired by the young storyteller”.
As the story is very personal to Spielberg, the renowned filmmaker takes on screenwriting duties for the first time in 20 years (artificial intelligence AI in 2001 being the last time he wrote a screenplay for a feature film) . Spielberg collaborated on this new screenplay with Tony Kushner, who he previously worked with on Munich, Lincoln and his upcoming West Side Story remake. Spielberg and Kushner are also producers alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger, who is another frequent collaborator on Spielberg. , having debuted as an associate producer on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, before producing products like Bridge of Spies in 2015 and The Post from 2017 – both of which received Oscar nominations for Best Picture.
Spielberg is one of the most powerful and influential people to ever work in Hollywood. The famous director rose to prominence in the 1970s and helped invent the modern blockbuster with films like Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, and for the most part he has remained at the top of the game ever since.

Spielberg’s upcoming directorial feature appears to be a follow-up to his West Side Story remake, which had its release date pushed back almost exactly one year, from a 2020 vacation outing to a 2021 vacation slot due to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Spielberg’s upcoming film adaptation of David Kertzer’s book The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara is also in pre-production.
Production on Spielberg’s next semi-biopic is set to begin this summer, with a release slated for 2022.
