The Eels survived the loss of star half-back Mitch Moses to eliminate 28-4 winners against the Sharks at Bankwest Stadium.
The former Tiger left the game for an HIA in the 26th minute and did not return, but Will Smith filled his gaping void at the half-back and played a starring role.
The Sharks were hit even harder on the injury front, being forced to play the entire second half without a single player on their bench.
Captain Wade Graham, British second rower Nikora and full-back Will Kennedy were all devastated by concussion, while winger Sione Katoa suffered a suspected left knee tear by MCL.
Sharks coach John Morris spoke of the injury carnage during his post-game press conference.
“Twenty years of experience as a player and coach in the game, I’ve never seen a team go down to 13 at halftime,” Morris said.
“Actually, we didn’t even use a single trade. We lost Sione Katoa to injury but the trading cards remained in today’s fold, so we had three HIAs and Sione Katoa and our bench was shot.
“We had front rowers defending back rowers, we had back rowers defending crosses. Our whole team was torn apart. There were eight or nine in a different position than they started the game in. .
“To hang on they were so brave and really showed what they’re made of. I’m really proud to be their coach on a day like today. I think they would have made the club proud to hang on. that long. We’re certainly very hurt and very broke about it, but I’m certainly very proud of them anyway. “
