Solid results: This new study provides even more promising data on the positive effects vaccines are starting to have on the pandemic. Last month, the English health authority reported that a single injection of the Oxford / AstraZeneca or Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine reduced the risk of requiring hospital treatment by more than 80%. Israel, which vaccinated more than half of its population recently reported that the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine was 94% effective against infections and 92% against serious illnesses.
A disturbing catch: Cases are on the rise again in several US states, despite the rapid acceleration of the vaccination program (72% of Americans 65 and over have now been vaccinated). The increase is very likely due to the effect of the more transmissible British variant. The increasing spread of variants makes the need for as many people as possible to get vaccinated even more urgent, not only in the United States, but in countries around the world because the supplies have already been purchased. Many countries have not yet vaccinated anyone. The more the virus is allowed to spread, the more likely it is that variants will emerge – and potentially variants that may elude existing vaccines.
