The two left-backs are vying for the starting place, having impressed both clubs throughout the season. But Ashley Cole and Roy Keane both agree on who they think should start for the Three Lions.
Speaking to ITV after England’s 2-0 win over Albania, Ashley Cole shared her thoughts on the debate:
“I think it’s a tight question between Shaw who I think is right up to the minute. I think he plays more regularly for Manchester United, whereas Chilwell – some days he plays [for Chelsea ] and some days it doesn’t. I think right now Shaw is in the lead. But who knows? Getting into the final games of the Premier League season, who can keep their cool and keep that consistency before the squad is announced. “
Luke Shaw has enjoyed a career resurgence at Manchester United this season and has become one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most trusted players. The Englishman’s form also precluded the summer signing of Alex Telles from the team and earned him his first call for England since 2018.
Roy Keane also prefers the Manchester United man over the Chelsea full-back
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane echoed Cole’s sentiments, preferring Shaw over Chelsea’s Chilwell. He said:
“This year he has been exceptional. I know he has had problems under [Jose] Mourinho, obviously, but he’s been consistent this year. To go forward, but defensively, I think he has the advantage over the other full-backs in the England squad. He improved that and nobody really got the better of him this one-on-one season. “
Chilwell, on the other hand, struggled to consolidate his place under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea. The Englishman only made 6 starts out of the 14 games Tuchel was in charge of, the German having chosen to pitch Marcos Alonso on numerous occasions.
Chilwell will need a long series of plays to move Shaw from Gareth Southgate’s starting XI. The two full-backs are clearly the favorites to be part of the final squad for the Euros.
