Get at least two yoga blocks. There will be times when, regardless of your shape and strength, you want your arms to be a bit longer to strike a pose. This is where a block comes in handy. When you need to plant a hand on the ground but aren’t flexible enough to reach it, the block will allow you to get ready.
You can also use blocks in other ways, such as lifting the pelvis or resting your head in other positions. It is the most useful and ubiquitous accessory. “It’s not about helping practice,” says Stanley. “It’s about deepening the practice.” Other options are bolsters, which are large cushions used for support in various positions where you wouldn’t want to use a hard block, and straps, which can help you reach your feet in poses where you need extra flexibility.
As with the mat and towel, you can use items lying around the house as alternatives if you want to save money while you’re still new to yoga. Glue the cardboard boxes together to form blocks. Use books or a sofa cushion. Stanley even used a trash can as a block and his dog’s leash as a yoga strap. You really don’t have to buy things to practice yoga, she says, although once you start improvising materials, you begin to realize the virtue of buying materials designed for yoga.
Wear the right clothes
“You should train as close to the nude as possible,” says Stanley. If you are comfortable training naked, do so. If you can’t because you share your home or just don’t have the idea, train in your underwear. I use them ExOfficio boxer shorts for hiking, but the stretch synthetic fabric is tight yet flexible: perfect for yoga. The woman version is made in the same way.
Still too much skin? Opt for tighter yoga clothes instead of loose, baggy clothes. Tighter yoga pants allow you to be more aware of your body position and worry less about extra fabric in your path. There is less yoga pants options for men than for women. Much of what is marketed to men is baggy, which hangs and catches up while positioning itself.
It’s easier to find a t-shirt in your wardrobe that will be suitable for yoga, but it might still help to buy one with a little stretch in the material to prevent it from restricting your movements. Yoga clothes are expensive, but you don’t have to spend a lot of money. Uniqlo offers affordable fitted pants marketed as leggings for women and tights for men it will work great for yoga.
