Collingwood slammed for late-game approach against Brisbane Lions, Zac Bailey goal video, highlights, results

Collingwood was heavily criticized for his approach at the end of the last quarter against the Brisbane Lions after being mermaid sting final.

Despite holding an eight-point lead both at the final change and in the final minutes, the Magpies were left to regret what could have been after Zac Bailey’s winning goal.

While this was an impressive overall performance from Nathan Buckley, a host of AFL greats criticized the Magpies for getting into their shell and trying to save the game in the dying minutes.

“The last three minutes, eight points clear, wins the game,” former Hawks forward Ben Dixon told Fox Footy.

“They didn’t win it, they were a deer in the headlights. They didn’t want to win.”

“They tried to save the game for the last few minutes,” added Geelong star Cam Mooney.

“As players you know when a team comes in and you know a team is going to throw it all at you, but you still have to go out there and play soccer. They’ve stopped playing soccer altogether.”

Former St Kilda star Nick Dal Santo has criticized a number of Collingwood players for stepping back in the final minutes instead of trying to win the turf battle.

“We were upstairs to watch it and the number of times they went back and forth,” he said.

“We understand why, you try to hold onto possession but you lose mileage. What we’ve learned from that, and hopefully both teams have game scenarios, knowing what to do in these critical moments is what the best teams do. ”

“The last 20 minutes, if you look at the two teams in isolation, Brisbane played to win,” Saints icon Nick Riewoldt added.

“They played a lot more daring, now it’s mostly because they were chasing.

“This review is going to be brutal for Collingwood. All the opportunities Brisbane wasted came out of Collingwood’s mistakes.

“They shouldn’t have given up on this game.”
