All-terrain vehicles do not hold a good place in GTA Online because most of them are simply outclassed by other vehicles in the game.
While it’s nice to specialize in mobility in arid countryside, it’s too small a niche compared to what other vehicles can offer a GTA Online player. For example, a helicopter or an airplane can cross Blaine County much faster than an all-terrain vehicle.
All-terrain vehicles are fun to play, but they just aren’t the practical choice of the vehicle in most situations. Something like the Insurgent or Nightshark is an outlier in terms of utility, since they are shielded armed vehicles. Most off-road vehicles do not have the niche that these two vehicles can offer a player. Unless a player is considering making Arena Wars or something less effective, there isn’t much to consider other all-terrain vehicles.
Are off-road vehicles worth the investment in GTA Online?
Most players focus on Heists and Businesses in GTA Online. Unfortunately, most all-terrain vehicles won’t help any player in either category. They are often too slow, sluggish, and lack stamina for serious shootings. Before delving into the affected off-road vehicles, it is important to note that this article only focuses on vehicles classified as off-road vehicles.
Something like the APC is a great off-road vehicle, but it’s technically classified as a military vehicle, not an all-terrain vehicle. Off-road vehicles are the ones that tend to lack the utility of most other vehicles. In a game with flying bikes and amphibious vehicles, it’s hard to justify buying an all-terrain vehicle that can’t compete with either.
However, there are some exceptions. As mentioned earlier, the Nightshark and Insurgent have a small niche as durable weapon vehicles that can aid low level players in heists. Other than that, some vehicles like the Sasquatch are viable in Arena Wars, but they’re not the best in that category. Therefore, players looking to succeed in it will likely buy other vehicles like the Apocalypse ZR380.
Advantages of off-road vehicles
Off-road vehicles tend to be more durable than other vehicles in other classes. This does not necessarily mean that they are armored vehicles, but compared to unarmoured vehicles, they are above average. Some off-road vehicles will collapse in a single explosion, which means that only a few of them are worth considering.
As the name suggests, all-terrain vehicles excel off-road. Players will not be slowed down while driving in the desert or on the grass like they would with other types of vehicles. Since the all-terrain vehicle archetype is diverse and includes a few motorcycles, getting from one point to another is quite easy.
Their diversity is also relevant for their price. Price is the biggest hurdle most gamers have when considering buying a new vehicle. There are a few off-road vehicles that cost a few million dollars, but most of the options available are quite affordable.
Why gamers shouldn’t invest in an all-terrain vehicle
Off-road vehicles are not required to own. Some of them excel in certain niches, but they are never the definitive vehicle to own. Therefore, owning an all-terrain vehicle is a low priority for most gamers. After all, most vehicles do well off-road and that doesn’t even say that every mission doesn’t require players to go off-road in the first place.
It’s not so much that off-road vehicles are bad in GTA Online; they are simply upgraded. Owning an off-road vehicle in GTA Online is not something a player should prioritize. It provides a solid alternative to more meta options, but it’s not objectively a must have.
Disadvantages of all-terrain vehicles
As mentioned earlier, today there are several vehicles that excel off-road in GTA Online. Besides the ubiquitous flying vehicles, several military vehicles and even sports cars are able to maneuver the various terrains of GTA Online without much hassle.
In addition, the player will not always be off the road to experience the supposed benefits of an all-terrain vehicle. If they are in the big city of Los Santos, virtually any other vehicle will serve the player very well in GTA Online. There are so many vehicles in GTA Online that some of them are required to be obsolete from the point of view of efficiency.
Finally, no all-terrain vehicle is the king of its current niche. Some do well Arena wars and others do well in missions, but it’s not a “must” purchase either. Unless the player really wants an all-terrain vehicle for some reason, there is often a better option to consider for a similar price in GTA Online.
