Capture monsters is a convenient way to speed up hunts in Monster Hunter Rise, and some quests require it. Below are the steps on how to capture a monster.
Before you go hunting, you will need to prepare and manage your items to be properly equipped. To trap a monster in Monster Hunter Rise, you need the following:
- Shock traps or Trap traps
- Tranq Bombs
How to make traps
Consult the crafting list in an item box to craft these items. Or check out our Manufacturing list page.
Once you are in the hunt and find the monster, you will need to fight it until it is weakened enough. You’ll know when it’s a good time to attempt to capture a monster when it starts limping away from you, towards its lair. A blue icon will appear under its own icon in the upper right corner of the screen (which you can see in the screenshot above.)
Your Palico can tell you when it’s time to capture a monster before the blue icon appears!
You can then put a trap under him and then throw Tranq bombs at his head to capture him. Set the trap in its path, use a flash bomb to prevent it from escaping, or if it has bypassed your trap, use a stinky mink to bring it back to the trap!
If the monster escapes, it will go to sleep in its lair. Set a trap under him while he sleeps and throw tranq bombs at his face. Wake him up, he will fall into the trap and be immediately captured.
Why you should (and shouldn’t) capture Monsters
Capturing a monster shaves a few minutes from your quest, which is useful. However, if you are looking for a particular material, check your hunter notes (or that Monsters page on this wiki if you haven’t unlocked it) for the best way to acquire it – some are easier to get by killing and sculpting, others by capturing!
A monster materials requires you to break pieces – so if you haven’t broken that particular piece even though it’s ready for capture, consider not doing it. Alternatively, some of the rarer monsters materials are easier to acquire during capture. Other rare materials may be easier to acquire while slaughtering and sculpting, however!
Change your method and your goals depending on the material you need! Either way, you should walk away from the quest with roughly the same number of rewards.
