Airbnb is taking new steps to prevent guests from using rented homes as party rugs on New Year’s Eve and spreading COVID.

On Thursday, the company implemented a two-night minimum for guests who lack positive reviews and want to rent an entire house that night.

The home rental service said the new restriction will apply to rentals in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France and Spain. Reservations that have already been booked for New Years Eve, regardless of user reviews, will be honored.

Users with positive reviews will not be subject to the new rule.

“This plan marks the latest in a series of recent changes to our platform to respond to this specific public health moment, prioritize safe and responsible travel, and do our part to try and stop the big ones. gatherings that can spread this virus, ”an Aribnb blog post reads.

The news arrives like Airbnb struggles with clients renting homes for unauthorized third parties, some of which turned violent. Last year a Halloween party in Orinda, California. finished with a shoot which killed five people and injured four others. Then in August of this year, three people were shot at an unauthorized party in Sacramento.

Airbnb also has created new cleaning standards to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Airbnb tries to show it has security under control after dropping off its IPO last month. The company’s shares could be negatively affected by security concerns once it starts trading.

As part of its efforts to prevent New Years Eve parties, Airbnb said it will have security guards throughout the night to provide immediate assistance to hosts or customers with concerns. Additionally, all customers who have successfully booked rentals for New Years Eve will be required to agree not to reject unauthorized parties and to acknowledge that they could be prosecuted for breach of the agreement.

Airbnb said it will also provide additional guidance to hosts to help reduce the likelihood of a guest hosting an unauthorized party. He advises hosts to update their house rules and proactively communicate them to their guests.
