Airbnb said on Wednesday it was canceling reservations and banning new ones in the Washington, DC metro area next week in response to official calls not to travel to the area for US inauguration week.

Airbnb also cited “reports emerging yesterday afternoon of armed militias and known hate groups attempting to travel and disrupt the grand opening,” in its announcement.
All guests whose reservations are canceled will be “refunded in full,” and hosts will be refunded for lost revenue resulting from the decision “at Airbnb’s expense,” the San Francisco-based company said.
Airbnb said it learned through media and law enforcement sources the names of “many people” linked to known hate groups or involved in the violent siege of the U.S. Capitol last week and banned them from the company’s platform .
“We are continuing our work to ensure that members of hate groups are not part of the Airbnb community,” the statement said.
The online marketplace has a policy of removing guests who are confirmed to be members of hate groups since 2017, when it blocked guests who were heading to a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Airbnb is one of the growing list of companies who take a stand against President Donald Trump and the violence committed in his name last week.
On Monday, the company said it would not make political donations to Republicans who voted against certification of election results last week.
