It is not known how the groups entered the program. On his website, Amazon says Smile is open to 501 (c) (3) charities. The five groups Amazon removed from the program are registered nonprofits. There appear to be more militia groups that Amazon has yet to remove. We have contacted the company for additional information and feedback, and will update this article when we get back to you.

The pullout follows a wave of coercive measures by Amazon against right-wing extremists. In the wake of pro-Trump riots on Capitol Hill, Amazon began removing QAnon related goods of its storefront, saying at the time that products that “promote, incite or glorify hatred or violence towards any person or group” on its platform. He also stopped providing hosting services in Parler, the social media app used by those who participated in the riot plan. With Talk, the company said the app failed to properly moderate messages calling for violence.
