Amazon opened its first payment-free store outside the United States, a Fresh store powered by the “Just get out“technology used in the United States To go stores. The store, located in the west London district of Ealing, offers Britons the same automated shopping experience that has been available to the American public since 2018. Instead of paying at manned or self-service checkouts, powered sensors by AI track the items you pick. off the shelves and put in your cart and the charge is automatically applied to your card upon checkout through the Amazon Go app.
“Our Amazon Fresh store in Ealing is the size of your typical convenience store, which measures approximately 2,500 square feet in the front of the house,” Amazon wrote in an FAQ. “We are delighted to bring this concept to the UK and look forward to opening additional stores in the Greater London area.”
The online retailer sources its food from local supermarket chain Morrisons, with which it already has a relationship with its Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service. It also offers a new private food brand “By Amazon”, with hundreds of products including “meat, poultry and fish, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, bakery, freshly prepared meals and basic necessities, ”Amazon said in a press release.
