Australia were fined 40% of their match fees and four test world championship points for a Slow over-rate against India in the second test.
The decision was made by former Australian batsman turned match referee David Boon after Tim Paine’s side were judged two overshoots after the time limits were taken into account.
According to rule 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, players are fined 20 percent of their match fees for each game their side falls short of the target.
Australia have been charged by field referees Bruce Oxenford and Paul Reiffel as well as third referee Paul Wilson and fourth referee Gerard Abood.
Skipper Tim Paine pleaded guilty to the violation and accepted the proposed penalty.
The heavy penalties for slow overestimates are a bitter pill to swallow for Paine’s team, who were completely outclassed in the second test by a resurgent team.
The MCG test is not the first game between the two sides this summer to have a cost problem.
