The green light for the Chinese Bureau’s official screening of the film comes just three days before the planned deployment. With such a short window between the two dates, it looks like some theaters may not be receiving their digital cinema packages (DCP) by Friday. The Chinese Cinema Bureau requested a re-release of Avatar in March 2020, as cinemas across the country attempted to reopen and the government began to deal with the spread of COVID-19. Spikes in local cases prevented exhibitors from fully reopening at the time.
The surprise reissue offers the possibility of Avatar reclaiming its record for the highest grossing film in global box office history. The film retained the superlative for almost 10 years grossing $ 2.790 billion before being overtaken by Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame’s $ 2.797 billion in 2019.
Avatar would only need $ 7.4 million and changes in this re-release to launch ahead of Marvel’s blockbuster. Disney will likely be happy anyway because the studio owns both films. Avatar was originally released by 20th Century Fox, which has since been acquired by Disney. No matter how many reissues of Avatar, the company will always hold onto the record.
Every actor and character confirmed for avatar sequels
Avatar was one of the first Hollywood blockbusters to become a crossover hit in China. Its first gross day set a new record for the biggest weekday opening in China. The film ended its airing in the country with a gross proceeds of $ 202.6 million.
