B n ‘D card game
You’ll start at rank C, with only the number of base cards available to you, but you can pick up more by beating other card players in the game room. Flip a coin to decide who goes first and choose your card game (you can customize up to three card decks). Each player places six cards on a grid, and whoever controls more territory at the end of the match (or when both players run out of cards) wins.
The cards will have bright green colors that represent the territory they can occupy on the grid. Special cards, like job cards, are extremely useful cards with additional special effects. A character card is even more special than a working card; these cards are permanent until replaced by another character card.
Hint: To resume the tutorial battle, talk to the player at the Savalon Game Room bar. You can also consult these rules in the logbook of the Tutorials menu.
You can view the details of a card by pressing X, and you can view all permanent effects currently active on the card by pressing R.
How to win a ‘B n’ D ‘card game
There are a few methods to claim territory on the grid:
Neutralization
Look at the green squares on your selected card. If any of the green squares can be placed to overlap an enemy square, your card will revert to the unoccupied state when the card is played.
Tip: when a square containing a token indicating an extended effect is neutralized, in addition to returning the square to unoccupied territory, the effect will also be removed.
Flanking
By surrounding the squares occupied by the opponent horizontally, vertically or diagonally between yours in order to appropriate the opponent’s tiles. Use the flanks to occupy a lot of territory at once.
Tip: neutralization cancels the flank. When neutralization and flank effects come into play on the same square, the neutralization will always have priority.
Define rule sets
Once you’ve collected all of an opponent’s cards, you can set up rules against that particular opponent, allowing you to dictate the terms of engagement the next time you play. You will not be able to claim additional cards by defeating an opponent whose cards you have already claimed.
NOTE: You * can * defeat Shirley at Rank C at the start of the game, but save your feat before you attempt. If you win, she’ll likely mop the floor with your party if you’re not ready.
Some rules will offer bonus extra points if used correctly, so it’s worth trying the extra challenge!
Also, once you have upgraded from Rank C to Rank B, Card Battles will start to have pre-set rules that you should pay attention to. You can view these rule sets before attempting a card battle with an NPC by viewing them (press X to see the rules) on the initial B n D encounter screen (the “Do Battle!” Screen) . This screen also includes information such as your rank, overall win / lose / draw record and B n D points you have accumulated, as well as a summary of win / lose / draw results with the selected NPC.
