Ben McDermott blew the Hurricanes past the Thunder, twice crushing the Manuka Oval ball for a pair of sixes destined for the season highlights reel.
The Hurricanes came out slowly after the Thunder put in a 177-5 total, with Sam Billings leading the Sydneysiders in scoring with 50.
It wasn’t until McDermott was called into the enclosure that the Tasmanians’ innings would come to life as he smashed 96 of 56 deliveries en route to a six-wicket victory (with 12 balls remaining).
But it was McDermott’s two ridiculous sixes that stole the show as he cleaned the Manuka Oval stands twice late in the game.
“Oh wow,” Brett Lee said on Fox Cricket. “It’s in the hotel – it’s out of here.”
“It’s in Lake Burley-Griffin,” said Mark Waugh.
“It’s also good that you’ll ever see a cricket ball hit,” added Brad Haddin. “Ben McDermott has it all. He stepped out of the entire Manuka Oval.”
The balloon was registered at 146 km / h in the wicket and Lee joked that it was “300 to start”.
The three Boland counters are completed
“This is possibly the biggest hit in BBL history,” suggested Mark Waugh.
McDermott has now scored 89, 91 and now 96 this BBL summer.
His teammate Scott Boland impressed with the ball in hand, taking four wickets, three of them in one.
The victory sees the Hurricanes tie the Thunder as the Sydneysiders continue their introspection after a recent string of losses.
