Jamal Campbell (remote sector)
In 2019, Jamal Campbell blew us away with his work on Naomi, and he started again this year in Far Sector. With its mind-boggling vision of a futuristic civilization where crime doesn’t exist and its unique, fully-realized character designs, there has never been a Green Lantern comic book that looks quite like this.
Jason Fabok and Brad Anderson (Batman: Three Jokers)
Three Jokers was long in coming, with Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok sowing the seeds for this “spiritual sequel” to Killing Joke during their run for the Justice League. Whatever your thoughts on the plot of Three Jokers, the art certainly justified the long wait. The amount of detail, precision, and cinematic flair artist Jason Fabok and colorist Brad Anderson put into this project make it one of the most beautiful Batman comics ever to be released.
Gurihiru (Superman crushes the Klan)
Gurihuru (a collective pseudonym of Japanese artists Chifuyu Sasaki and Naoko Kawano) is known for its clean and elegant lines, expressive characters and vivid colors. These qualities make them perfectly suited for that light but timely update to a classic Superman tale. It was the sleekest Superman comic released in 2020, and that says a lot.
Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer (Wonder Woman: Dead Earth)
DC’s Black Label print gives artists a chance to get discouraged without worrying about pesky things like continuity. In other words, the perfect playground for such a daring and unique artist as Daniel Warren Johnson. Johnson’s grungy, heavy metal take on Wonder Woman mythology makes us wish the character always looked that way.
Dan Mora and Tamra Bonvillain (Once & Future)
Once & Future stands out amid a sea of King Arthur stories, and that’s thanks in large part to the work of artist Dan Mora and colorist Tamra Bonvillain. Sleek, imaginative character designs and intricately rendered pages make Once & Future a modern fantasy epic like no other.
