Saladin Ahmed (Spider-Man: Miles Morales, The Magnificent Ms. Marvel, Conan: Battle For The Serpent Crown)
Miles Morales and Kamala Khan are arguably the two most popular teenage heroes that Marvel has introduced in this century. They are also characters closely linked to their respective creators. It says a lot about how Saladin Ahmed has managed to take the reins of Miles and Kamala’s solo books and really make these characters his own. Plus, he delivered a good Conan tale in Battle for the Serpent Crown.
Tom Taylor (DCeased 2: Dead Earth, Suicide Squad, Injustice: Year Zero)
The best thing about the Injustice series isn’t the games themselves, but the delicious Tom Taylor spinoff comics. Taylor continues to flesh out that universe in 2020 with the prequel series Injustice: Year Zero, while also providing fans with a satisfying sequel to the zombie-heavy DCeased. And if that wasn’t enough, Taylor worked his magic within the DCU core with the best incarnation of Suicide Squad since the days of Jon Ostrander.
James Tynion IV (Batman, Something Kills Children, Department of Truth)
James Tyinon IV had an incredible run in 2020. On the one hand, he oversaw the flagship DC Batman comic book and the massive Joker War crossover / On the other, he was responsible for two of the best books owned by creators on the stands in Something Is Killing Children and the Truth Department.
Ram V (Catwoman, Justice League Dark, blue in green)
Ram V is emerging as one of DC’s best and most vital voices, kicking off some very promising runs on both Catwoman and Justice League Dark. But V’s biggest achievement in 2020 is arguably the haunting, jazz-infused graphic novel Blue in Green. We can’t wait to see what new projects he has in store for 2021.
Chip Zdarsky (Daredevil, X-Men / Fantastic Four, Stillwater)
Daredevil might just be Marvel’s best ongoing series right now, and that alone would be enough to earn Chip Zdarsky a palace on this list. But paired with the highly entertaining X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover series and Skybound’s captivating new horror series Stillwater, Zdarsky has always proven himself to be one of the greats.
