Joe Biden’s candidate for Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman was the main US negotiator for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
United States President-elect Joe Biden has appointed a key negotiator of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal to be the next United States Deputy Secretary of State, the second-highest position in the State Department.
In one declaration On Saturday, Biden unveiled a slew of State Department candidates, including longtime diplomat Wendy Sherman for assistant secretary of state.
Sherman, professor and director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Kennedy School at Harvard University, was Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs for four years under Barack Obama’s administration, when Biden was vice president.
“She was successful in rallying the world to strengthen democracy and tackle some of the greatest national security challenges of our time, including leading the US negotiating team for the Iran deal,” the statement said.

Biden, which will be inaugurated on January 20, has vowed to revert to the deal under which Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for lifting international sanctions.
President Donald Trump unilaterally took of of the deal in 2018 as it pursued a strategy of “maximum pressure” against the Iranian government.
The Trump administration hit Tehran with a wide range of sanctions, and tensions between the two countries escalated amid a torrent of rhetoric and hostile actions in the final weeks of the Republican president’s tenure.
In mid-December, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Tehran was not necessarily “excited” for Biden to take office, but was “very happy” to see Trump’s presidency come to an end. “We’re not very excited about Biden coming, but we’re very happy Trump is gone” Rouhani said.
Meanwhile, Biden also appointed on Saturday Victoria Nuland, retired foreign service officer and senior US diplomat for Europe, NATO ambassador and State Department spokesperson, as Under Secretary for political affairs.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a confirmation hearing Tuesday for Antony Blinken, Biden’s candidate for secretary of state.
