Joseph Safra, Brazil’s richest man and one of the richest bankers in the world, died of natural causes on Thursday at the age of 82.

Descendant of a family of Syrian bankers, Safra moved to Brazil from Lebanon in 1962 and founded Safra Bank, which is today the country’s eighth bank in Latin America.

At the time of his death, he was President of Safra Group, a network of banking, financial and industrial companies.

His fortune was estimated at nearly $ 23 billion. Considered conservative and discreet, the banker maintained a fortified 100-room mansion in São Paulo’s upscale Morumbi neighborhood. But he lived in Switzerland for the last years of his life.
