The shutdown came when the state capital of Amazonas received gunfire just to cover 34% of the 56,000 health workers.

The Brazilian city of Manaus has suspended its vaccination campaign for 24 hours so that the state of Amazonas can review its distribution plan.

The suspension “which responds to the recommendation of the local control bodies, was taken so that the state government presents a reorganized plan for the distribution of the doses”, one reads in a declaration of the city administration released Thursday.

During the first two days of the vaccination campaign started on Tuesday, 1,140 healthcare professionals received the first dose of CoronaVac in Manaus. On the same day, other Brazilian states administered their first doses of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine after its approval on Sunday for emergency use. The country has also approved the British vaccine AstraZeneca.

However, the capital and largest city of the state of Amazonas have received enough vaccines to cover just 34% of the 56,000 healthcare workers.

“With the low volume of doses of Covid-19 vaccines transmitted by the state government to the town hall of Manaus – only 40,072 of the 282,000 received from the Ministry of Health”, the municipality had to review its vaccination plan , according to another press release. of the city administration.

Meanwhile, the case of two sisters accused of being vaccinated purely on the basis of family ties caused a stir in Manaus. They are the daughters of a well-known university director.

Politicians, entrepreneurs and civil servants have been vaccinated in at least 11 Brazilian states and in the district of Brasilia, the capital, although they do not belong to the designated priority groups, the G1 news site reported.

The suspension of inoculation in Manaus comes as Brazil struggles to contain the pandemic with depleted oxygen supplies in clinics due to the number of patients with COVID-19.

The country has reported more than 214,000 deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic, just behind the United States, while nearly 8.7 million people have been infected so far, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Amazonas state has been hit particularly hard among Brazil’s 27 states, with a death rate of 159 per 100,000 inhabitants in a region where rivers and forest land make the logistical challenges of a health crisis even more difficult. .

County Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello said last week the Manaus hospital system was collapsing as health facilities were understaffed and quickly lacked oxygen.

Amazonas has recorded at least 232,000 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to official figures.

Hospitals in Manaus have admitted a few new patients with COVID-19, causing many to suffer from the disease at home and some to die.

Many doctors had to choose which COVID-19 patients would receive oxygen, while desperate family members searched for oxygen tanks for loved ones.

The city receives an average of four Brazilian Air Force flights per day to boost oxygen stocks, as well as one shipment per day from the city of Belém, near the mouth of the Amazon River, according to officials.
