Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters says Anthony Milford among contenders for captain

Must read

Boom five-eighth Anthony Milford became a contender for the Brisbane Broncos captaincy in the club’s darkest chapter.

Several players are vying for the skipper of the Queensland club after Kevin Walters declared the post vacant at the start of his tenure late last year.

Representative of New Zealand and the Cook Islands Alex glenn took the job for the club’s sad 2020 season, which saw the Broncos reclaim their first wooden spoon in history.

But the veteran only managed eight games due to injury and was replaced by Patrick Carrigan and Brodie Croft as alternate captains.

Forward Payne Haas is seen among the contenders, however his arrest earlier this month may have destroyed his luck.

Walters told media yesterday that Milford was among those scrambling to become the 11th official Broncos captain in history.

“We’ll make a decision on (the harbor master’s office) later next month or early March when the season starts,” Walters said.

“There are definitely guys raising their hands and Anthony is one of them.

“He’s a good coach and he’s a good player. Now it’s up to Anthony to work with the team and sort out the issues we face.

“I was very impressed with all the players and Milf came back in good shape after Christmas which shows that he is determined for a very good season here at the Broncos.”

Milford has teased Brisbane fans with shades of shine at five-eighth, half-back and full-back since crossing the Canberra Raiders after the 2014 season, but consistency has always been an issue.

The 26-year-old made two appearances in the home state for Queensland in 2017 and 2018, but has since been overlooked.

Walters said he expects each of his players to be responsible, regardless of who has been named captain.

“Alex Glenn did a good job under tough circumstances last year, but we want all of our players to be leaders,” said Walters.

“It doesn’t matter whether they’re captain or not, we want them all to stand up and play the way they can.

“We know what they can do on the pitch and it’s up to them to do it in a few weeks now.”
