China will open its 500-meter (1,600-foot) telescope to the global scientific community from April 1. Global Times reported. The Sky Eye satellite dish is the world’s largest spherical aperture radio telescope (FAST) used to locate pulsars and other astronomical energetic targets. It will also be used occasionally to search extraterrestrial life.
Foreign scientists will be able to submit applications to China’s National Astronomical Observatories online, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency. After examination, the hours of observation will be distributed from August 1. According to FAST chief engineer Jiang Peng, around 10% of observation time will be allocated to global astronomers this year.
