Cleveland baseball team plans to drop ‘Indian’ name

The Cleveland baseball team plans to remove the word “Indians” from its name, the New York Times reports, citing three people familiar with the decision.

The team do not yet have a plan for their new name and may use the Indians’ name for the 2021 season before moving away, one of the people said. Another option could be to continue without a replacement name and come up with one in the future, two people said. The plans could be announced as early as this week, according to the report.

The Cleveland team, which moved away from its cartoonish tribal chief logo and previously announced plans to reconsider its nickname, did not immediately comment on the Times.

In the months since George Floyd’s death by police in Minneapolis, a global race and equality calculation resulted in several name and brand changes to abandon slurs and racist images. The Washington football team dropped the word “Redskins” earlier this year. Several other U.S. professional sports teams with tribal names and images, including the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Blackhawks, have said they will keep their names.
