Sporting News staff give their picks for the national championship game.

Choice of CFP championship

Bill Bender: Alabama 37, Ohio State 34

“Come back to that last Sugar Bowl meeting, and Alabama finished 2 of 13 for third. The Buckeyes have a knack for competing with the Crimson Tide, and Justin Fields presents a problem for the defense. It comes down to execution. in games like this, and Alabama have shown just how unstoppable they can be in the first half against Notre Dame. The Crimson Tide will be able to do what Clemson couldn’t, and that. is leading the game. Najee Harris’ success opens the passing game for Mac Jones, and this talented group of receivers will convert on those key third downs. It will add up to another classic thriller. The Buckeyes can win this game, especially if Trey Sermon matches Harris. Alabama, however, gets the last score and save. ”

Zac Al-Khateeb: Alabama 42, State of Ohio 34

“Clemson was the victim of an unexpected loss to Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. As complete and cathartic as the victory was, it takes away any chance for the Buckeyes to catch Nick Saban and Alabama off guard. The Crimson Tides are better equipped to protect Mac Jones than Clemson was with Trevor Lawrence, and the former has no shortage of weapons at DeVonta Smith and Najee Harris – maybe even Jaylen Waddle – to make big numbers. Fields and Trey Sermon will score enough to keep the Buckeyes there, but wait for Alabama to challenge the Buckeyes quarterback all night. A bend-don’t-break game from the Tide defense, paired with their formidable offense, should allow Alabama to claim victory.

Mike DeCourcy: Ohio State 38, Alabama 35

“Can the Buckeyes stop the tide? No. It might take a combination of 86 Penn State, 79 Alabama and 01 Miami to do this job. But Ohio State, at its best, has was almost as impressive as an offense. The Buckeyes rolled over Clemson in a way few saw coming. It’ll be a bigger challenge in this one, but Trey Sermon’s emergence as a crushing runner has reinforced this team in a way that even the Buckeyes didn’t see coming, and it will be more vital with Justin Fields’ mid-section likely to remain tender. They’re going to have to score to win. And at some point, they’ll need of a crucial stop. And getting it against the tide’s variety of weapons will be more difficult than against Trevor Lawrence and the Tigers, but Ohio State can win.

Vinnie Iyer: Alabama 44, Ohio State 34

“Crimson Tide’s offense ‘calmed down’ against Notre Dame because they controlled the game and their defense played well enough not to make the CFP semi-final a shootout. The Buckeyes hit across the board with Justin Fields and Trey Sermon versus Clemson, so ‘Bama will be pushed back to his typical offensive boom with Mac Jones, Najee Harris and DeVonta Smith. Fields won’t have it easy against a stronger D. while Jones, Harris and Smith will lead the way in letting ‘Bama have his way.’

Matt Lutovsky: Alabama 38, Ohio State 31

“This game could go either way, but Alabama has superior attacking talent and will likely be the best defense Ohio State has faced all year. There is no reason to doubt that. state of Ohio after what the Buckeyes just did to Clemson, but there’s even less reason to doubt a more complete Alabama team that could grab another dynamic weapon from Jaylen Waddle (ankle ). “
