Less than five months after world No.1 Dustin Johnson won his first green jacket, the world’s best golfers return to Augusta from today, presenting the sport’s most prestigious award there.
After the 2020 schedule has been ruined by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Masters is back to its traditional April slot, with the famous course set to play differently from the one featured in November.
Five Australians – Cameron Smith, Adam Scott, Jason Day, Marc Leishman and Matt Jones – are on the pitch, but with Day and Masters Champion 2013 Scott both falling in the rankings over the past two years, neither is considered a favorite.
Perhaps the best placed Aussie leading up to The Masters is Smith, who at 27 is starting to come to his prime and has taken over from the main Aussie player (mullet haircut and all). He has long been seen as a pending major champion and appears to have the best chance of the five of winning Australia’s first major title since Day won the PGA Championship in 2015.
A powerful American contingent stands in its way, led by Johnson and world No.2 Justin Thomas.
While Tiger Woods to be a notable absentee after being hospitalized in shocking car crash at the end of February, his absence comes at a time when the top of the world golf tree is littered with Americans, with a crowd of them having better chances of donning the green jacket.
Johnson and Thomas are the top two picks for bookies, but behind them are Bryson deChambeau and a resurgent Jordan Spieth who broke his long PGA Tour drought with a victory in Texas last week.
HOW TO WATCH
Every four days of The Masters will be broadcast on Gem from 5 a.m. AEST the first three days of the tournament and at 4 a.m. on Monday, the date on which the winner of the green jacket will be determined.
The tournament will also be broadcast on 9 now, with three special additional streams showing Amen Corner, feature groups and the 15th and 16th holes.

Second round, Saturday April 10: coverage from 5 a.m.
Third round, Sunday April 11: coverage from 5 a.m.
Fourth round, Monday April 12: coverage from 4 a.m.

HOW MUCH PRIZE MONEY IS OFFERED?
Make no mistake, the players who take the Masters course are there for one of the sport’s most prestigious awards, the green jacket. However, the healthy handbag provides its own motivation.
For this year’s tournament, the total purse is north of $ 15 million (AUD), with the winner taking home just over $ 2.7 million.
The top five will all pocket over $ 500,000 for their four days on the job and even those who miss the cup and are home before the weekend (US time) will leave Augusta with over $ 35,000 each.
