While we all know that the sugar in traditional sugar cookies is detrimental to our health, you can still get all the flavor of homemade cookies with this fun lip scrub recipe. It tastes and smells like a sugar cookie. Best of all, it will exfoliate and nourish your lips, without compromising your healthy lifestyle.

I never paid much attention to lip scrubs. During the winter when dry lips hit I would take homemade lip balm, like this peppermint one. However, lip scrubs really help exfoliate the dead skin buildup that makes lips feel crisp and gummy. Not only do you get rid of the grime on your lips, but the oils and honey in this help nourish the delicate skin in this area of the face. I always like to continue with a homemade lip balm for extra hydration during the winter months.

How to make a sugar cookie lip scrub

The first ingredient in this lip scrub recipe is virgin coconut oil. Coconut oil has many uses for skin and hair, and it’s also a healthy addition to your diet. In this lip scrub, it provides moisture, antioxidants and helps thicken the product. If you’re looking for other ways to incorporate this superfood into your life, try making chewable remineralizers.

Sweet almond oil is the liquid carrier oil here because it helps smooth everything out. You can substitute any other liquid carrier oil of your choice, but the sweet nutty smell of the sweet almond really adds to the mood of the sugar cookies. The fatty acids and vitamins A and E make sweet almond oil the perfect choice for nourishing lips.

Like carrier oils, raw honey helps hydrate lips. It also has healing properties to restore and rejuvenate damaged lips. It is so powerful that naturally antibacterial raw honey is even used to speed healing of wounds and burns. Raw honey is also lightly emulsifying, so it helps bind the ingredients in this lip scrub recipe. You can find out more about the healing uses of raw honey here.

Sugar Cookie Lip Scrub Recipe

A vanilla sugar lip scrub that’s good enough (and natural enough) to eat!

Instructions

  • In a small glass bowl, combine all the ingredients. Crush them and mix them with a rubber spoon or spatula until well blended and a little creamy.

  • Store your lip balm recipe in a ½ ounce glass jar.

Notes

  • Use your finger to remove a small amount of lip scrub and gently rub it on your lips to exfoliate, then rinse with a washcloth dipped in lukewarm water.
  • Make sure to lean over a sink when using it, as its use is quite complicated.

A note on vanilla …

The vanilla extract gives this lip scrub recipe a real smell and taste of a sugar cookie. I like to make my own homemade vanilla extract (get the recipe here), but for this it is better to use a vanilla extract based on glycerin. If you only have access to alcohol-based vanilla extract, you can still use it as there is enough moisture in the other ingredients to make up for it.

Glycerin acts as a humectant to moisturize lips, while alcohol dries out more. It’s a common ingredient in even many natural toothpastes, but I deliberately avoid it in my homemade toothpaste. While glycerin coats the enamel and promotes tooth decay, it’s actually very soothing to the skin and lips, so it’s great for skin care.

What’s your favorite lip product? Do you have problems with dry lips in winter?
