England vs India News | Ajinkya Rahane’s third mistake catches Joe Root in anger

England captain Joe Root was left angry after third referee Anil Chaudhary completely misunderstood – and therefore botched – a criticism of Indian drummer Ajinkya Rahane in the second test.

England looked at an apparent bat-stack capture by Ollie Pope on spinner Jack Leach, with Rahane clearly gliding the ball as he came out of the stack.

Rahane wasn’t given away, so England immediately saw it again – and that’s when Chaudhary knocked out cricket with a DRS shock.

The third referee never inquired about whether Rahane gloved the ball, only checking to see if he had tipped the ball when he initially passed his bat. He therefore upheld the decision on the pitch, sparking disbelief from the England squad and viewers of the game.

UltraEdge technology confirmed contact with Rahane’s gloves a few bullets later.

“It’s there and it’s pretty clear as day,” former England drummer Mark Butcher said in a comment.

“All it would have taken was third referee Anil Chaudhary to look at that reverse angle and Rahane would be gone.

“Joe was absolutely pissed off he was sure it was contact with the ball on the exit.”

Fortunately, Rahane was also returned a few balls later, played by Mooen Ali with just one point added to his score.

Yet it was a dismal refereeing moment that sparked a strong backlash, led by former England captain Michael Vaughan.

England ended up being handed the criticism, an apparent concession after the mistake. India finished the day on 6-300, led by Rohit Sharma’s 161 over Chennai ground which spat out dirt almost from the start.

Chaudhary gave Rohit the benefit of the doubt in an extremely close decisive decision that could well have been given, although like Rahane, it wasn’t long before his actual dismissal.
