Facebook said it would not be able to fully implement these measures right away. “As it is early and the facts about COVID-19 vaccines will continue to evolve, we will regularly update the claims that we remove based on advice from public health authorities as they learn more,” written in a blog post. Facebook said it was providing vaccine details from “authoritative sources” via the COVID-19 Information Center.

The company previously anti-vaccine ads banned at a broader level. In the past, Facebook has removed false allegations about the polio vaccine in Pakistan and the measles vaccine in Samoa.

Meanwhile, Facebook is apparently shifting its moderation practices to another front. Documents obtained by the Washington post suggest the company is in the early stages of overhauling its algorithms that detect hate speech. Facebook would try to improve its systems to automatically locate and remove the “worst of the worst” hate speech. This includes insults directed at people of color, the LGBTQ community and Jews.
